The Cerritos College men's basketball team got a lesson
in executing back-cuts and kicking out to hit long range
jumpers in their non-conference game against Orange
Coast College at The Aviary on Wednesday night. The
Pirates shot 56% from the field in the game, including
draining nine three-pointers, as they recorded an 87-62
victory. With the loss, the Falcons dropped to 3-4 on
the season, while Orange Coast improved to 4-3. Next up
for Cerritos is a non-conference game at Ventura College
on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
Each time the Falcons would drop back to cover the
back-door pass, Orange Coast was able to kick the ball
out to three-point range, with six different players
obliging for the opportunity to drain shots from the
outside. In the first half, it was Diego Delgado who had
two, including one midway through the first half that
gave the Pirates a 19-11 lead after Cerritos held on to
an 11-10 advantage. Looking to freshman guard
Demetrius Turner (King-Drew
HS), the Falcons made just 10-of-38 shots in
the first half, with Turner leading the team with 10
points. Orange Coast held a 44-27 advantage at
intermission.
It was in the second half, the the combination of inside
and outside scoring allowed Orange Coast to hold leads
in the 20's throughout the half and even went up 85-55
with 3:27 remaining. Steven Cornett led all scorers with
25 points and also hauled in 14 rebounds, while Shaun
Eagle was effective driving the ball and kicking it out,
as he finished with eight assists to go along with 11
points.
For the Falcons, Turner finished with 17 points and six
rebounds, while freshman guard
Clyde Thomas (Long
Beach Jordan HS) scored all 11 of his points
in the second half. Cerritos was able to out-rebound the
Pirates, 42-35, but mainly because of the hot shooting
by Orange Coast. By contrast, Cerritos shot only 32%
from the field and made just 5-of-24 shots from
three-point range.
Delgado added 13 points and seven rebounds for Orange
Coast, with Cameron Wise finishing with 13 points, four
rebounds and four assists. For the Falcons, freshman
center
Brandon Bell (St.
John Bosco HS) came off the bench to chip in
five points and six rebounds, while freshman forward
Travele Jones (Inglewood
HS) had eight points, five rebounds and four
steals. |
