Jeff Hughes
begins his first year on the Cerritos
College men’s basketball coaching staff and
is no stranger to community college
basketball with 12 years of coaching
experience at this level. He began his
career as an assistant coach at Columbia
College. During the 1992-93 season, the team
posted a 33-3 record and won the state
championship. He then spent nine years at
Bakersfield College, and as an associate
head coach during the 1997-98 season, the
team went 32-4 and reached the state
championship game. Hughes became the head
coach the following year and had three
20-plus win seasons, including two trips to
the Southern California Regional Finals.
Hughes then left
Bakersfield College after the 2001-02 season
and chose to leave the coaching profession.
After missing the game, he decided to resume
his coaching career last year at West Hills
College as an assistant under former
Bakersfield head coach Mark Arce. That team
posted a 26-10 record and lost in the first
round of the State Championships.
Coach Hughes has
stated that he is extremely grateful to now
get the opportunity to coach at Cerritos
College with Head Coach Gary Cain and
Associate Head Coach Tito Ortiz.
As a player,
Hughes played one year at the University of
Colorado before transferring to Santa Ana
College. He then finished his final two
years at California State University
Bakersfield. Hughes earned his Master’s
degree in Special Education, as well as his
Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. He
is currently teaching at La Serna High
School
The son of
former Long Beach City College and NBA
player Rex Hughes, his brother Rich is
currently the head coach at Bakersfield
College. Hughes is the proud father of two
daughters – Alison (14) and Lauren (12). |
