NAME: JEFF HUGHES
POS: ASSISTANT COACH

Jeff Hughes begins his first year on the Cerritos College men’s basketball coaching staff and is no stranger to community college basketball with 12 years of coaching experience at this level. He began his career as an assistant coach at Columbia College. During the 1992-93 season, the team posted a 33-3 record and won the state championship. He then spent nine years at Bakersfield College, and as an associate head coach during the 1997-98 season, the team went 32-4 and reached the state championship game. Hughes became the head coach the following year and had three 20-plus win seasons, including two trips to the Southern California Regional Finals.

Hughes then left Bakersfield College after the 2001-02 season and chose to leave the coaching profession. After missing the game, he decided to resume his coaching career last year at West Hills College as an assistant under former Bakersfield head coach Mark Arce. That team posted a 26-10 record and lost in the first round of the State Championships.

Coach Hughes has stated that he is extremely grateful to now get the opportunity to coach at Cerritos College with Head Coach Gary Cain and Associate Head Coach Tito Ortiz.

As a player, Hughes played one year at the University of Colorado before transferring to Santa Ana College. He then finished his final two years at California State University Bakersfield. Hughes earned his Master’s degree in Special Education, as well as his Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. He is currently teaching at La Serna High School

The son of former Long Beach City College and NBA player Rex Hughes, his brother Rich is currently the head coach at Bakersfield College. Hughes is the proud father of two daughters – Alison (14) and Lauren (12).
