The Cerritos College men’s
basketball team has a knack for playing good
teams very closely. However, they are
finding it difficult to win those games,
which has resulted in several heartbreaking
losses. The Falcons, looking for their first
South Coast Conference South Division win,
ran out of time on Friday night in a 70-66
loss against Los Angeles Southwest College
(15-12, 4-0). The Falcons (11-13, 0-3) will
now get a chance for their first divisional
win, as well as their first victory at home
this season on Wednesday, February 6, when
they conclude their suspended game against
Los Angeles Harbor College from Wednesday
night.
The
game was suspended when LA Harbor’s Antonio
Hodge broke the backboard with a dunk with
the scored tied, 53-53 with 13:13 remaining
in the second half. The game will conclude
at 7:30 p.m. after the Falcon women’s game
against Compton College.
In
the loss to the Cougars, Cerritos only led
in the game twice, once at 25-23 with 4:07
remaining in the first half, and then 42-40
with 14:46 left in the game. LA Southwest
went on a 9-2 run after sophomore guard
Aaron Thompson’s (Washington Prep
HS) put-back that put Cerritos in the
lead. From that point on, the closest they
got was 66-64 with 17.6 seconds left after
another Thompson put-back.
Kendrick Harris and Dante Maddox each
converted a pair of free throws in the final
seconds of the game to keep the contest a
two-possession game. The Cougars rode a pair
of clutch three-pointers from Jejuan Brown,
the second coming with 4:36 left that put LA
Southwest on top, 63-67.
Thompson led the team with 21 points and
14 rebounds, while sophomore forward
Travele Jones (Inglewood HS)
contributed 12 points and seven boards, with
10 of his points coming in the second half.
Freshman
Van Girard (Gahr HS) added 10
points and eight rebounds, with sophomore
Aaron King (Mayfair HS)
adding seven points.
