According to Cerritos College
men’s basketball coach
Gary
Cain, his team turned in their best
all-around performance of the season, as his
squad recorded a 100-80 South Coast
Conference crossover win at Pasadena City
College on Wednesday night. With the win,
the Falcons are now 9-10 on the season,
while the Lancers fell to 2-12. Cerritos
will now play another crossover game when
they travel to Mt. San Antonio College for a
7:30 p.m. game on Friday.
“I
really think this was our best game from
start to finish all season,” said Cain, who
has seen his team lose three games by four
points and five by six points or less. “The
guys seemed to just relax and play and it
showed in their overall performance. I hope
that we have turned the corner and can
replicate this performance each and every
game.”
On
the night, the Falcons shot an impressive
61% from the field and received an
outstanding performance from sophomore guard
Aaron King (Mayfair HS), who
scored a season-high 23 points on 7-of-13
shooting, including 3-of-4 from three-point
range. The team’s leading scorer, sophomore
Aaron Thompson (Washington Prep
HS), continued to play at both ends of
the court, as he scored 25 points, pulled
down 14 rebounds and dished out six assists,
all team highs.
Leading from the outset, 16-5, the
Falcons then surrendered 10 straight points
to Pasadena City, before holding a 54-39
lead at intermission. That lead swelled to
as much as 68-44 with 15:26 remaining, but
held off the onslaught of Harold Cleveland,
who tried to single-handedly bring PCC back
into the game. He scored 11 straight points
and then 13 straight points, as the Lancers
go to within 77-69. But the Falcons pulled
away, thanks to the play of King and
Thompson, while sophomore forward
Travele Jones (Inglewood HS)
contributed 17 points and six rebounds.
Coming off the bench, freshman
Justin Gilliam (Warren HS)
converted all four of his field goals and
finished with 10 points and seven rebounds,
while sophomore guard
Jerell Elder (Long Beach Millikan
HS) chipped in with nine points.
