After sophomore forward
Travele Jones (Inglewood HS)
drained a three-pointer with 7:13 left in
the second half to get the Cerritos College
men’s basketball team to within a 58-53
deficit with El Camino College on Friday
night, the Cerritos College men’s basketball
team appeared to be ready to make their
move. However, the wouldn’t score again
until 50 seconds were left in the game, as
the Warriors went on a 22-0 run and posted
an 80-60 South Coast Conference South
Division win. The loss snapped a four-game
winning streak for the Falcons (11-11, 0-1),
while the Warriors improved to 15-5 overall
and 1-0 in divisional play. Cerritos will
look to start a new winning streak on
Wednesday night when they travel to Long
Beach City for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
Leading by eight (22-14)
with 9:10 left in the first half, Cerritos
appeared to be on the road to continuing
their fine play they have distributed over
the last two weeks. But a couple of
turnovers that resulted in consecutive El
Camino baskets started a downward spiral
over the rest of the half that would see the
Warriors turn in a 19-4 run to take a 33-26
lead into the locker room at halftime.
After falling behind
48-38, Cerritos slowly started to turn the
momentum in their favor, but each time they
would make a move, El Camino answered right
back, mainly on a three-pointer by Chad
Hunt, who drained four in the second half.
The Falcons also didn’t have an answer for
Marquise Wright, who scored 24 on the night,
along with nine rebounds.
Jones and sophomore guard
Aaron Thompson (Washington Prep
HS) tried to bring the team back, but
they didn’t see their shots fall, which was
the same fate the rest of the team
experienced. Jones finished with a team-high
17 points, along with five rebounds and five
blocked shots, while Thompson was limited to
nine points and six rebounds.
Freshman guard
Van Girard (Gahr HS) came off
the bench and added seven points, while the
trio of
Jeremiah Barnes (Los Altos HS),
Darrell Thomas (King/Drew HS)
and
Wayne Chapman (Bellflower HS)
all scored six points.
