After winning
their opening round game of the Irvine
Valley Tournament on Thursday, the Cerritos
College men’s basketball team dropped the
next two to see their season mark fall to
2-3 on the year. After their 60-48 win over
Cuyamaca College, the Falcons were defeated
by both Irvine Valley College (67-54) and
then Ventura College (85-81) in the third
place game. Cerritos will now travel to
College of the Canyons for a 7:00 p.m. game
on November 28 in a non-conference contest.
In the loss to Irvine
Valley, the team fell behind by as many as
24 points (56-32) with less than 10 minutes
left in the game, which included a 14-2 run
to start the second half. Looking to bring
the team back with his outside shooting was
freshman guard
Wayne Chapman (Bellflower HS),
who led the team with 13 points and drained
a pair of three-pointers. Also hitting a
couple of treys was sophomore guard
Andre Zeumault (Garfield (WA) HS),
who added 10 points, with sophomore guard
Aaron Thompson (Washington Prep
HS) hauling down 10 boards to compliment
his four steals and two assists before
fouling out.
Last
year, the Falcons won the third place game,
but this year they came up short on a late
rally against the Pirates. Down by
double-digits most of the second half,
Thompson put on an incredible performance,
netting 13-of-17 shots and finished with 38
points, tying him for the seventh-highest
single-game output in school history. It was
also the most points scored in the
tournament this year and second most in the
history of the tournament. Thompson drained
all nine of his free throws and also found
time to add seven rebounds and five assists.
Also playing well at both ends of the court
was sophomore forward
Travele Jones (Inglewood HS),
who scored 13 points, pulled down six boards
and blocked five shots, while Chapman
chipped in eight points and dished out four
assists.
