Brian
Barner (Palisades HS), moved
into sixth place on the school's single-season

01.23.09 - Falcons blow past
Vikings, 78-48
They've
been facing each other for 40 years and have squared
off 97 times, but Friday night's Cerritos College
men's basketball game against Long Beach City
College saw something none of the other games ever
experienced. The Falcons (6-13, 2-1), who have
struggled most of the season, put together their
best game of the season and the results showed, as
the team recorded a 30-point win (78-48). The
largest margin of victory prior to Friday's South
Coast Conference South Division game at Cerritos was
a 99-70 win by the Vikings (9-12, 2-1) in 1990. The
30-point win was the first time either team has
beaten their opponent by as many points, as the two
teams have now each won 48 games in the series.
Cerritos will now play their next
three games on the road, opening with a South
Division game at Compton College at 7:30 p.m. on
Wednesday night.
From the outset of
the game, it appeared Long Beach City might be the
team to win by 30 points, as they jumped out to an
8-0 lead. Cerritos was able to tie the game at 19 on
a basket by sophomore guard
Jeremiah
Barnes (Los Altos HS), while

Falcons, 87-72
The Cerritos College men's
basketball team converted only 11-of-26 free throws

the Canyons on Wednesday night. By contrast, the
Cougars (3-8) converted 23-of-29 from the free throw
line and made 45.6% of their field goals. The
Falcons (3-5) will now travel to the San Diego Mesa
Tournament on Friday and will open with the host
Olympians.
Although they led by as many as 11

half, Cerritos struggled over the next eight minutes
and didn't score their next point until a
three-pointer from freshman guard
Brian
Barner (Palisades HS) with
5:38 remaining. By then, the Cougars had gone on a
15-0 run that was halted by the trey by Barner.

East Los Angeles College had dwindled to a 39-37
advantage. However, sophomore guard
Van
Girard (Gahr HS) scored 10
consecutive points over the next 1:35 to regain a
double-digit lead and the Falcons went on to post a
70-60 victory. The win by Cerritos (3-4) was their
first at home for first-year head coach
Jesse
Teplitzky, while the Huskies dropped to

second win in a row when they host College of the
Canyons at 6:30 p.m. next Wednesday.
