Down by seven
points (91-84) with 2.8 seconds left in the second
half, the Cerritos College men's basketball team
turned in one of the most amazing comebacks in all
of basketball on Wednesday night in a South Coast
Conference non-conference game at Los Angeles
Trade-Tech College. The Falcons scored seven points
to send the game into overtime and went on to record
a 107-100 win that pulled their season record to
9-13. The team will resume South Division play when
they host Los Angeles Southwest College at 7:30 p.m.
on Friday.
The comeback
started when freshman guard
Jeremy Pope
(Mayfair HS) was fouled while attempting a
three-point shot with 2.8 seconds remaining. After
converting all three shots, sophomore guard
Van Girard
(Gahr HS) stole the inbounds pass and
scored on a layup with 1.1 seconds left. The Beavers
(12-12) then attempted a long pass, but the ball was
overthrown and the Falcons had the ball under their
basket with no time running off the clock. The team
set a pair of beautiful picks for freshman forward
Marcellus Jackson (Independence HS),
who scored on a layup at the buzzer. In overtime,
Cerritos continued to shoot well and put the game
away with 16 overtime points.
On the night,
freshman guard
Brian
Barner (Palisades HS) was key
to the win, as he drained six three-pointers and
finished with a team-high 24 points off the bench.
Girard, who made 8-of-15 shots, added 20 points,
eight rebounds and four steals off the bench for the
Falcons. As for Jackson, he contributed 20 points
and 11 rebounds, marking the first time this season
the team had three 20-point scorers in the same
game. Pope directed the offense and dished out 11
assists, while adding 15 points, while guards
Jeremiah Barnes (Los Altos HS)
had seven assists and freshman
Sean
Chennault (Ben Franklin (PA) HS)
dished out six to go along with his eight points.
Sophomore guard
Gregory
Preer (St. Vincent-St. Mary (OH)
HS/Ashland (OH) University) had a great game
with 18 points and nine rebounds.
