After their 89-63
South Coast Conference South Division win by the
Cerritos College men's basketball team over ECC
Compton Center on Wednesday night, the Falcons have
just one regular season game remaining. The Falcons,
winners of their last eight games, are now 13-13
overall, while they clinched the divisional title
outright with an 8-1 record. Cerritos will close out
the regular season on Friday at 7:30 p.m. against
Los Angeles Harbor College and then wait until
Monday to find out where they will be seeded in the
Southern California Regional Playoffs, which get
underway next Wednesday.
Already in
post-season form, the Falcons shot 53.5% against the
Tartars and drained 10-of-16 three-pointers. Leading
the shower of three-pointers was sophomore guard
Jeremiah Barnes (Los Altos HS),
who knocked down 5-of-6 and scored a season-high 17
points. Freshman guard
Brian
Barner (Palisades HS), moved
into sixth place on the school's single-season
record for most three-pointers made in a season when
he drained two more to give him 76 on the year. The
school record of 97 was set by Marco McCain
during the 1998-99 season.
It was a definite
team effort in the win, as five different players
scored in double figures, while freshman forward
Marcellus Jackson (Independence HS)
recorded a double-double for the ninth time in the
last 10 games when he scored 10 points and pulled
down a game-high 17 rebounds. Jackson now has 286
rebounds on the year and is close to becoming only
the 11th player in school history ever to pull down
more than 300 rebounds in a season.
Sophomore forward
Van Girard (Gahr HS) came off
the bench and converted 9-of-11 field goals to lead
the team with 19 points, to go along with 10
rebounds, while freshman guard
Jeremy Pope
(Mayfair HS) had his own version of a
double-double with his 14 points and 10 assists.
Freshman guard
Sean
Chennault (Ben Franklin (PA) HS)
also scored 10 points and dished out five assists,
while Jackson also blocked a season-high six shots
in the win.
