The Cerritos
College men's basketball team did just enough to
post an 80-76 Southern California Regional Playoff
win over host Los Angeles Valley College on
Wednesday night. The Falcons (15-13), seeded #17 out
of the 20 teams, will now advance to the second
round, where they will face top-seeded Saddleback
College (25-7) at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday night. The
team has now won 10 games in a row and 13 of their
last 14 games.
Down one with 1:30
left in the second half, sophomore guard
Van Girard
(Gahr HS) converted an offensive rebound
off a missed
Gregory
Preer (St. Vincent St. Mary (OH)
HS/Ashland (OH) University) jumper to put the
team up by a point. The Monarchs (16-12) went down a
missed a shot and received possession of the ball
after the rebound was booted out of bounds. Another
missed shot resulted in freshman guard
Leo Arnold
(Santa Monica HS) getting fouled with 26
seconds left and he converted one of two free
throws.
LA Valley looked
to take the lead with a three-point attempt, but
missed and freshman guard
Jeremy Pope
(Mayfair HS) was fouled. He missed both
attempts, but the Monarchs missed their third
straight three-pointer and Preer connected on one of
two free throws for a 79-76 lead with five seconds
remaining.
The game went back
and forth the entire game, with each leading by no
more than five points at any time in the game.
Preer led the
Falcons with 21 points, while freshman forward
Marcellus Jackson (Independence HS)
added 15 points, with Pope finishing with 12.
Sophomore guard
Jeremiah
Barnes (Los Altos HS)
contributed 10 points, with Girard scoring nine.
