Faced with the
final shot of the game, the Cerritos College men's
basketball team called timeout with 19.6 seconds
remaining in their South Coast Conference South
Division home game against El Camino College on
Wednesday night. The Falcons decided to take the
ball to the basket when the clock went under 10
seconds, with sophomore guard
Jeremiah
Barnes (Los Altos HS) driving
the baseline. He missed the first shot, but
sophomore guard
Van Girard
(Gahr HS) was under the basket for the
potential game-winning basket. But his tip rolled
off the back of the rim and the Falcons suffered a
65-64 loss to the Warriors. Cerritos (5-13 overall)
will now host cross-town rival Long Beach City
College at 7:30 p.m. on Friday in another divisional
game.
Leading 60-58 with
4:26 left in the game after a three-pointer from
sophomore guard
Gregory
Preer (St. Vincent St. Mary (OH)
HS/Ashland (OH) HS), the Falcons didn't score
their next basket until 1:32 was remaining. In the
meantime, the Warriors (9-1, 1-1) had gone up 63-60,
thanks to a basket and two free throws from Lonnie
Bennett. The winning points were scored by Lavon
Myers, who netted two free throws with 23.4 seconds
left to put El Camino up, 65-64.
Leading by six
(33-27) at intermission, the Falcons quickly saw El
Camino come right back in the second half and took a
51-50 lead with 9:41 left after Paul Davis came off
the bench to score on a short jumper. However, the
Cerritos allowed their lead with less than a minute
to slip away and the team suffered their second
one-point loss of the season and fourth by three
points or less.
Before he fouled
out which sent Myers to the line, freshman forward
Marcellus Jackson (Independence HS)
led the way with 14 points and 15 rebounds, while
Girard contributed 11 points and eight caroms. As
for Preer, he accounted for 11 points and five
rebounds off the bench. For El Camino, Bennett led
all scorers with 24 points.
