In the last two
games, the Cerritos College men's basketball team
has shown that they appear have to worked past their
early-season struggles and have turned in
outstanding performances. On Friday, the Falcons
posted a 30-point win over Long Beach City, while
the team continued to excel, as they led ECC Compton
Center by as many as 22 points before settling for a
74-60 South Coast Conference South Division road
win. Cerritos (7-13 overall, 3-1) are riding their
second two-game winning streak of the season and
will play their second of three straight road games
on Friday at Los Angeles Harbor College.
Down by 10 points
(22-12) with 8:00 left in the first half, the
Falcons worked their way back into the game took the
lead for good after sophomore guard
Van Girard
(Gahr HS) scored from under the basket with
1:56 remaining for a 25-24 lead. Cerritos settled
for a 27-26 advantage at intermission, but came out
strong in the second half and played superb defense,
while they converted countless high-percentage
shots.
Coming out in the
second half, sophomore guard
Gregory
Preer (St. Vincent St. Mary (OH)
HS/Ashland (OH) University) gave the Falcons a
six point lead (32-26) on a three-pointer that
seemed to open the floodgates. The lead swelled to
49-34 with 12:57 left after a
Sean
Chennault (Ben Franklin (PA) HS)
bucket, while it was a 22-point lead (61-39) with
9:37 left after sophomore guard
Jeremiah
Barnes (Los Altos HS) finished
off another fast break basket.
Freshman forward
Marcellus Jackson (Independence HS)
led the way with 19 points (8-of-12 FG) and 11
rebounds, while Girard finished with 17 points and
five rebounds off the bench. But it was the play of
freshman guard
Jeremy Pope
(Mayfair HS) that seemed to stand out the
most. Settling into his starting role, Pope recorded
nine points, six assists, three steals and three
rebounds, while he shared the duties of directing
the offense.
Preer pulled down
10 rebounds to go with his seven points, while the
