Six members of the
South Coast Conference South Division champion
Cerritos College men's basketball team have
announced their plans for next season. The entire
team, meeting together for the last time, talked
about their time with the Falcons, who finished the
season with a 15-14 record and were eliminated in
the second round of the Southern California Regional
Playoffs by eventual state runner-up Saddleback
College, 65-61.
Those that have
received scholarships include sophomores
Van Girard
(Gahr HS), who will be playing at
Cal State Dominguez Hills,
Jeremiah
Barnes (Los Altos HS), who
signed with Dixie State (UT) College and
Gregory
Preer (St. Vincent St. Mary (OH)
HS/Ashland (OH) University), who signed with
Cal State Bakersfield after considering signing a
pro contract to play in Mexico. Joining them are
freshman guard
Brian
Barner (Palisades HS), who
will have three seasons to play at Cal State
Northridge, while freshman forward
Jonathan
Garcia (St. John Bosco HS) is
still deciding if he will transfer to Chapman
University. As for sophomore
Jorge
Sanchez (Norwalk HS), he has
applied to UCLA and is looking to get into medical
school.
Girard and Preer
were named 1st Team All-SCC, while Barner received
2nd Team recognition. As for Girard, he came off the
bench to lead the team in scoring (14.7) and also
averaged 8.6 rebounds and shot 52% from the field.
On the year, his 13.9 points also leads the team,
while he averages 8.1 rebounds and is the team
leader in field goal percentage, .525. Preer is the
third player to average double figures in divisional
play (10.7) and is second in rebounds at 8.8 per
game. Barner, the team's leader in three-point field
goals made (80) on the year, averaged 8.6 points a
game in the division, while he scores 10.7 points on
the year.
