Cerritos College
men's basketball head coach
Jesse
Teplitzky was relieved to get his first
win of his Falcon career on Thursday night, as his
team pulled out a 64-61 win over College of the
Canyons in the first round of the Irvine Valley
Tournament. After opening the season with a loss to
MiraCosta College last Friday, he felt as though
their next opportunity couldn't come fast enough.
With the victory, the Falcons (1-1) will now face
Cuyamaca College at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. Cuyamaca
defeated Teplitzky's old team, Santa Monica College,
62-48 in their first round game.
Still working on
their timing with a predominantly new team, the
Falcons still committed 19 turnovers, but found
their shooting range when needed. Cerritos shot
51.9% from the field in the second half, and were
led by a trio of players who scored in
double-figures. The team also worked better as a
unit, as they recorded 19 assists on their 25
baskets. Freshman guard
Brian
Barner (Palisades HS) drained
4-of-8 from three-point range and finished with 14
points and four assists, while freshman forward
Marcellus Jackson (Independence
(San Jose) HS) netted 6-of-12 shots and led the
team with 15 points, while pulling down six
rebounds.
Sophomore guard
Van Girard (Gahr HS) led the
team with nine boards and finished with 13 points
and three assists, with sophomore guard
Gregory
Preer (St. Vincent St. Mary (OH)
HS/Ashland (OH) University) added nine points,
eight rebounds and three assists.
