Down by eight points (58-50) with 5:39 remaining in their non-conference home game against Cypress College on Friday night, the Cerritos College men's basketball team slowly worked their way back into the game trailed 63-62 with 49 seconds left after a basket by freshman Jeremy Pope (Mayfair HS). But the Chargers Tim Austin scored on a layup with 18 seconds left with the Falcons looking for the last shot. After burning their last timeout with 7:29 left in the game, Cerritos worked the ball into three-point range, where Pope's shot was off line and the Falcons dropped a 65-62 decision. The loss put Cerritos at 2-3 on the year, while Cypress is also 2-3. The team will now travel to Los Angeles City College next Saturday for a 7:30 South Coast Conference crossover game.

With three players already fouled out and sophomore guard Van Girard (Gahr HS) out the entire second half with an injury, the Falcons were shorthanded against a Cypress team that boasted more height and depth. But after a pair of free throws from freshman Leo Arnold (Santa Monica HS) put Cerritos up 50-46 with 8:16 remaining, it would take 3:03 before the team scored their next basket. In the meantime, the Chargers, led by a pair of three-pointers from John Staats, highlighted a 12-point swing before a short jumper by freshman guard Brian Barner (Palisades HS) with 5:03 ended the drought.

DuWayne Kind led Cypress with 20 points and added six rebounds, while Staats scored all seven of his points in the second half. For the Falcons, Arnold had nine second half points with sophomore guard Gregory Preer (St. Vincent St. Mary (OH) HS/Ashland (OH) University) leading the team with 11 points. Girard scored the team's first eight points before getting injured and also contributed five rebounds. Freshman forward Marcellus Jackson (Independence (San Jose) HS) pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds and also scored nine points.

By the end of the game, five players had fouled out with 61 fouls being called. Both teams combined to go 35-for-71 from the free throw line.
