Down by 10 points
with a little over three minutes left in the second
half, the Cerritos College men's basketball team
finished off their comeback when sophomore forward
Marcellus Jackson (Independence HS)
converted a fast break layup with 20 seconds left
for an 84-83 lead. The end result was an 85-83 win
over Mt. San Jacinto College in the first round of
the Riverside Tournament on Tuesday. The Falcons
(7-3) will now get a day off before they face the
host Tigers at 5:00 p.m. in a second round game on
Thursday.
Highlighting the
comeback for Cerritos - in addition to Jackson - was
sophomore guard
Ken Brown
(Soldan, MO HS/Southwest Tennessee CC), who
scored a career-high 33 points off the bench. Brown
nailed 10-of-13 shots on the night, with five of
them coming from three-point range, while also
leading the team with seven assists and four steals.
Jackson, who also came in off the bench, accounted
for 18 points and a team-high 10 rebounds, as the
Falcons outscored the Eagles 54-13 off the bench.
After falling
behind 19-9 in the first half, Cerritos took their
first lead of the game at 33-32 with 1:18 remaining.
The Eagles did hold a 34-33 lead at intermission and
then led by as many as 12 points (67-55) with 9:14
left in the game.
Freshman forward
Willie Edwards (Moreno Valley HS)
contributed 17 points, eight rebounds and three
assists, while sophomore guard
Wayne
Chapman (Bellflower HS)
chipped in with eight points and four boards. D'Andre
Williams led Mt. San Jacinto with 24 points.
