In a game that
inevitably came down to free throw shooting, the
Cerritos College men's basketball team just didn't
get enough opportunities in their 79-72 loss to
Riverside College in the second round of the
Riverside Tournament on Thursday. As a result, the
Falcons (7-4) will now drop to the consolation
bracket and face San Bernardino Valley College at
3:00 p.m. on Friday.
On the night, the
Tigers (8-2), the defending state champions, made 16
of their 24 attempts at the line, while the Falcons
were limited to just 10 trips to the charity stripe,
making seven. Riverside closed out the game at the
free throw line, as Cerritos looked to get back into
position to win the game one possession at a time.
Trailing most of
the game, the team turned to sophomore guard
Jeremy Pope
(Mayfair HS), who has shown a hot shooting
touch in the past. He displayed it in the game, as
he netted four three-pointers and led the team with
20 points. But as a team, the Falcons struggled from
the field, making just 43.3% of their field goals,
while Riverside was converting 52.8% of their shots.
Sophomore forward
Marcellus Jackson (Independence HS)
returned to the starting lineup and contributed 12
points, along with a team-high 11 rebounds. As for
sophomore guard
Brandon
Hicks (Gahr HS), he connected
on all four of his shots, including a pair of
three-pointers to score a season-high 12 points.
Sophomore guard
Ken Brown
(Soldan, MO HS/Southwest Tennessee CC) was
limited to just nine points on 3-for-13 shooting
after tearing up the nets for 33 points in their
opening round game. He did lead the team with six
assists, while Pope added five.
