Cerritos College sophomore guard
Jeremy
Pope ( Mayfair HS) hit
6-of-10 shots, including a trio of
three-pointers to lead the team with 21 points
off the bench in an 89-79 South Coast Conference
crossover win over ECC Compton Center at The
Aviary on Wednesday night. The win improves the
Falcons record to 14-10 overall, while the
Tartars fell to 8-12. Cerritos will now resume
South Division play on Friday when they play at
7:30 p.m. at Los Angeles Harbor College.
In the first half, the Falcons opened up an
18-point lead (43-28) with 3:17 remaining,
thanks in part to a pair of three-pointers from
freshman guard
Greg
Howell (Artesia HS) and
another from sophomore guard
Wayne
Chapman (Bellflower HS).
Cerritos took advantage of a Compton team
looking to score from the outside, while the
Falcons worked their fast break when available
and hit the treys, as well.
Chapman, who contributed 19 points, five
rebounds, four assists and three steals,
converted 8-of-10 free throws in a game that saw
59 personal fouls called by the officials. On
the night, the Falcons made 27-of-37 free
throws, with 30 of those attempts coming in the
second half.
Compton was able to close the gap to 49-40 with
18:26 remaining after a pair of baskets by LaVon
Myers (27 points), but it was turnovers that
hurt them along the way. The Falcons were more
than happy to clean up on the opportunities,
with sophomore forward
Marcellus Jackson (Independence
HS) chipping in with 12 points, 10 rebounds
and six blocked shots, while freshman forward
Willie Edwards (Moreno Valley
HS) added 11 points.
