Not known for his outside shooting, Cerritos
College freshman forward
Willie Edwards (Moreno Valley
HS) showed that he can be dangerous from
three-point range. Leading 63-60 with time
running out on the shot clock, Edwards netted
his third trey of the season with 28 seconds in
the game left to give the Falcons a six point
lead. The team went on to post a 68-65 South
Coast Conference South Division win over host
Los Angeles Harbor College on Friday night to
move to 15-10 overall and 4-11 in the division.
Cerritos will now travel to Los Angeles
Southwest College on Wednesday for a 7:30
divisional game.
Trailing by as many as nine points late in the
first half (31-24), the Falcons scored the first
six points of the second half, thanks to
sophomore guard
Wayne
Chapman (Bellflower HS),
who accounted for all the points. But it was
freshman guard
Greg
Howell (Artesia HS) who
put Cerritos in the lead for good with three
straight three-pointers, giving the team a 39-35
lead with 15:29 remaining in the second half.
The Falcons would hold the lead for the
remainder of the game, as an alley-oop slam dunk
by sophomore
Marcellus Jackson (Independence
HS) gave the team their largest lead of the
game, 60-51 with 7:00 remaining. The Seahawks
(10-13, 2-3) turned to Kevin Dawson to try and
stay in the game and he responded by scoring 19
of his game-high 23 points in the second half.
Howell, who drained four three-pointers in the
second half, led the Falcons with 19 points,
while Edwards added 15 points and nine rebounds.
As for Jackson, he was limited to just nine
points, but pulled down 12 rebounds and posted
three assists. Chapman (nine points, five
assists) and sophomore guard
Jeremy
Pope (Mayfair HS), who
scored 11 points and registered five assists,
also played well for Cerritos.
