It was a mad
scramble in the final seconds of Friday night's
South Coast Conference South Division opener in The
Aviary at Cerritos College. The Falcons, clinging to
a 62-61 lead in the final 13 seconds, looked to hold
off Los Angeles Harbor College, who was trying to
take their first lead since early in the game. On
their inbound pass, Falcon sophomore guard
Wayne
Chapman (Bellflower HS)
appeared the have stolen the ball on and overthrown
pass. But, when he couldn't gain control, the
Seahawks got the ball and found themselves with a
2-on-1 break. Three LA Harbor players had tip shots
to take the lead, with none of them falling. The end
result was a 62-61 win for Cerritos (11-9, 1-0),
while the Seahawks fell to 8-11 overall and 0-1 in
divisional play. The Falcons will now host Los
Angeles Southwest College at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
After opening up a
sizable 13-point lead (46-33) with 14:07 remaining,
it looked as though Cerritos was going to pull away.
But a pair of turnovers and poor shot selection
allowed LA Harbor to go on 9-0 run over the span of
5:13 to get to within 46-42. The Falcons got their
lead back up to 56-47 after a three-pointer from
sophomore guard
Jeremy Pope
(Mayfair HS), but once again the Seahawks
fought back and closed the game to 58-56 with 1:27
left. Kevin Dawson then canned a long three-pointer
with 16 seconds left o put the score at 62-61 before
the final barrage of shots ended the game.
The Falcons were
led by a pair of scorers off the bench, with Pope
(12 points) and sophomore forward
Marcellus
Jackson (Independence HS), who
added 10 points and 13 rebounds, leading the way.
Chapman chipped in with 10 points and three assists,
while sophomore guard
Sean
Chennault (Ben Franklin, PA HS)
added nine points and five rebounds. Sophomore guard
Ken
Brown (Soldan, MO HS/Southwest
Tennessee CC) dished out seven assists and was
held to five points. Dawson lead the Seahawks with
12 points.
