After playing a
tight 20 minutes against Los Angeles Southwest
College in a South Coast Conference South Division
game on Wednesday night at The Aviary, the Cerritos
College men's basketball team turned on the
after-burners and opened up a 20-point second half
lead. The end result was a convincing 95-78 win by
the Falcons (12-9, 2-0), who will now travel to El
Camino College for a 7:30 p.m. game on Friday.
The game turned
around with some aggressive defense, which led to a
surge on the offensive side. The Falcons opened up a
10-point lead (53-43) with 15:11 remaining after
sophomore guard
Jeremy Pope
(Mayfair HS) drained a three-pointer in
transition after a Cougar (10-11, 0-2) turnover.
Consecutive three-pointers from freshman guard
Greg Howell (Artesia HS) put
the team up by 18 points and they never looked back.
In the first half,
Cerritos shot well, but was victimized by 13
turnovers, which allowed the streaky Cougar team to
stay in the game. LA Southwest opened by taking an
early 22-11 lead, but struggled to find their shot
in the second half and finished the game 28-for-64
from the field, which included a 7-for-25 night from
three-point range. By comparison, the Falcons made
55% of their shots and were 11-for-23 from
three-point range.
Four of the six
players that scored in double-figures for Cerritos
came off the bench, as Howell was 5-for-5 from the
field and made all four of his treys, to finish with
14 points. Joining him were sophomores
Marcellus
Jackson (Independence HS) and
Sean
Chennault (Ben Franklin, PA HS),
who each scored 12 points, while sophomore
Brandon
Hicks (Bellflower HS) added
10. Pope led the team with 15 points, while the duo
of Dontae Clark and Casey Jones led the Cougars with
15 points apiece.
