Down 79-78 with 20
seconds left in the second half, the Cerritos
College men's basketball team had a chance to come
back and beat Los Angeles Trade-Tech College at The
Aviary on Thursday night. Even after sophomore
forward
Ramon
Williams (Bellflower HS)
missed a baseline jumper, the Falcons got the ball
back with one second left when they tied the ball up
under the basket. Sophomore guard
Wayne
Chapman (Bellflower HS) was
long on his three-point attempt and Cerritos
suffered a 79-78 defeat. The loss dropped the
Falcons to 2-2 on the season, while the Beavers
improved to 2-0. Cerritos will now enter the Irvine
Valley Tournament starting next Thursday.
The game also
marked the home debut of new head coach
Russ May,
who played for the Falcons from 1989-91 and served
as an assistant coach from 1994-99.
Trailing by as
many as 14 points (29-15), the Falcons tried to stay
with an up-tempo Trade-Tech team that also shot well
from the outside. They were able to tie the game in
the first half at 34 after a pair of
Dominic
Kilgore (Cerritos HS) free
throws, but then trailed 45-38 at intermission.
It was more of the
same in the second half, as the Beavers fought off
every Cerritos rally, thanks in part to 21 points
from Austin Bowen and 17 points from Yashin Ali.
Williams drained a three-pointer with 3:45 remaining
to get the team tied at 75, while sophomore
Greg
Howell (Artesia HS) gave the
Falcons a 78-77 lead with 1:41 left after he netted
a three-pointer. But it was Bowen who scored the
eventual game-winning basket on a driving layup with
:26 seconds left.
Williams (four
rebounds, three steals) and Chapman (three
rebounds) led the Falcons with 12 points each, while
sophomore
Marcellus
Jackson (Independence HS)
added 11 points and seven boards. Sophomore guard
Ken
Brown (Soldan (MO) HS/Southwest
Tennessee CC) accounted for 11 points, six
assists and three steals in a losing cause.
