The Cerritos
College men's basketball team picked up a pair of
wins at the Irvine Valley Tournament, to improve
their record to 4-3 on the year. The Falcons, who
host Rise Academy (PA) on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. on
Saturday, scored a 70-64 win over Cuyamaca College
in the first round and after a 76-70 setback to the
host Lasers, finished with a 70-63 victory over
Imperial Valley College.
In the opening win
over Cuyamaca, Cerritos jumped out to a 37-26 lead
at halftime and then held on in the second half. The
Falcons got 14 points and eight rebounds from
sophomore
Marcellus
Jackson (Independence HS)
and nine points from sophomore
Sean
Chennault (Ben Franklin, PA HS)
off the bench. Sophomore guard
Jeremy Pope
(Mayfair HS) chipped in with eight points
and six steals, as well as seven points and five
rebounds coming from freshman
Willie
Edwards (Moreno Valley HS).
Sophomore guard
Wayne Chapman (Bellflower HS)
led the Falcons in the loss to Irvine Valley, as he
scored 17 points and posted three steals, with
Jackson (nine points, six rebounds) also playing
well. A trio of Cerritos players scored eight
points, as Pope, Edwards and freshman
Greg
Howell (Artesia HS) all made
contributions. Unlike in the Cuyamaca game where the
team has just 12 turnovers, they gave the ball away
14 times against Irvine Valley and were
out-rebounded 41-22.
Beset by injuries
and illness, the Falcons looked to Pope in the win
over Imperial Valley. He locked down an
all-tournament bid with a tournament-high 32 points
on 8-of-15 shooting to go along with a 13-for-15
night at the free throw line. Down 27-25 at
intermission, Pope spearheaded a comeback that saw
the Falcons only have seven players available in the
second half. Edwards added 11 points, while Chapman
posted eight points and dished out four assists.
