2010-11 Men's Basketball News...

This Week's Sports Schedule

02.18.11 - Last-second shot rattles out
Cerritos College freshman guard Keith Wiltz (J.W. North HS) was not having the best shooting night he's ever experienced, but when it comes to taking big shots, he wants the ball. Wiltz had his last-second shot rattle in and out of the rim and the Falcons (9-18, 3-10) concluded their season with a 63-62 South Coast Conference loss at El Camino College on Friday...[more]

02.15.11 - All-around effort snaps six-game skid
Anthony Scott scores 19 points off the bench to help snap a six-game skid. For the Cerritos College men's basketball team, their 80-77 South Coast Conference win over Los Angeles Southwest College on Tuesday night at Gahr High School offered more than snapping their six-game losing streak. The Falcons showed that they could control a game for an extended period of time, even after their offense shut down for a 10-minute period in the second half. Cerritos (9-17, 3-9) lost their 18-point second half lead, but came right back and regained the lead and held on for the win. The team closes out their season on Friday at 7:00 p.m. at El Camino College.

Taking a 40-30 halftime lead was a luxury the Falcons were unfamiliar with since their last meeting with the Cougars back on January 14, when they received a four-point play at the buzzer by sophomore guard Nick Sanchez (Long Beach Wilson HS/Antelope Valley College) to win the game. But even an 18-point lead (61-43) with 12:54 left in the game wasn't enough, as LA Southwest slowly fought their way back in the game on the strength of Dontae Clark and Tyree Beals...[more]

02.11.11 - Cerritos runs out of steam against LA Harbor
Keith Wiltz hit four three-pointers to lead the Falcons. For the better part of the season, the Cerritos College men's basketball team has shown a pattern of falling behind early in a game and then spending the rest of the contest fighting to get back within striking distance. It was more of the same on Friday at Gahr High School, as the Falcons trailed by as many as 17 points (61-44) in the second half, cut it to seven (77-70) before falling 79-77 to Los Angeles Harbor College. Cerritos (8-17, 2-9) have one more home game remaining on the year and will host Los Angeles Southwest College at 8:00 p.m. next Tuesday. They then close out the year at El Camino College next Friday.

The Seahawks (15-11, 10-2), who are the surprise of the conference, relied on the overall abilities of Dennis Hardwell, while Sheldon Allen combined his size on defense, with some speed on offense. Hardwell, who led all scorers with 20 points and 14 rebounds, helped LA Harbor open a 21-10 lead at the outset of the game...[more]

02.04.11 - Falcons drop close contest with LB City
Looking to avenge an earlier loss to rival Long Beach City College, the Cerritos College men's basketball team made another late game comeback that fell short on Friday night in their South Coast Conference game. The Falcons, who fought back from a 63-56 deficit with 3:33 left in the game, saw Stephan Heard score on a layup with 38 seconds left to lead the Vikings to a 67-65 win. Cerritos dropped to 8-16 overall and 2-8 in the SCC with their fifth straight loss, while LB City improved to 12-10 and 7-3. The team has three more games remaining in the season and will host Los Angeles Harbor College at 6:00 p.m. on Friday...[more]

Darius Williams scored 19 points and added six rebounds in a losing cause.02.01.11 - Losing streak extended with loss to Lancers
It seems every time the Cerritos College men's basketball team was able to close their deficit against Pasadena City College at Gahr High School on Tuesday night, the Lancers had an answer. If it wasn't Josh Johnson, then it was Shawn Hampton that did in the Falcons in their 96-81 South Coast Conference loss. The Falcons (8-15, 2-7) will now travel to Long Beach City College for a 7:00 p.m. conference game on Friday and have just four games left in the season.

Johnson, the son of former NBA player Marques Johnson, dominated the game at times, as he combined strong offensive moves to go along with his rebounding abilities. After freshman guard Jeremy Chadwell (Calvary Chapel HS) drained a three-pointer from the corner with 11:21 left in the game to cut their deficit to 66-64, it was Johnson and Hampton who scored the next 17 Lancer (7-15, 2-7) points to push their lead back into double-figures...[more]

01.28.11 - Another close game comes up short for Cerritos
Although the Cerritos College men's basketball team is mired in a three-game losing streak, they have found themselves in close games in recent weeks. The Falcons, who dropped to 8-14 overall and 2-6 in the South Coast Conference after their 80-78 loss at Los Angeles Trade-Tech College on Friday night, have lost eight of their games by less than 10 points. They will look to snap their losing streak on Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. when they host Pasadena City College at Gahr High School...[more]

01.25.11 - Outside shooting does in Falcons
The Cerritos College men's basketball team got off to a fast start in the first half of their South Coast Conference game on Tuesday at Gahr High School against Mt. San Antonio College. But that fast start could not compare to the hot hand of Mounties guard Evin Ware, who was playing in his old high school gym. After a scoreless first half, Ware drained five straight three-pointers for Mt. San Antonio and finished with six in the half, as the Mounties posted an 89-79 win. The Falcons (8-13, 2-5) dropped their second game in a row, while Mt. SAC improved to 18-3 and 7-0. Cerritos will now travel to Los Angeles Trade-Tech College on Friday for a 7:00 .m. game...[more]

01.21.11 - Bad second half results in loss
For the first 18 minutes of their South Coast Conference game against ECC Compton Center on Friday night, the Cerritos College men's basketball team had things well under control. They were leading 40-24 and everything they did went right. But their play in the final two minutes of the first half seemed to carry over into the second half and the Falcons quickly saw their lead go away for good, as they dropped an 82-73 game. The loss snapped a modest two-game winning streak for Cerritos (8-12, 2-4), while the Tartars improved to 11-7 and 3-2. The Falcons will now host Mt. San Antonio at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday...[more]

01.18.11 - Cerritos holds on for conference win
Although the Cerritos College men's basketball team is only 8-11 on the year, they have shown the type of improvements as the season has progressed that has allowed them to remain competitive in every game. On Tuesday night at Gahr High School, the Falcons (2-2 SCC) came back from an 11-point second-half deficit and posted a 70-67 South Coast Conference South Division win over El Camino College. The win was the second in a row for Cerritos, who will now travel to Compton on Friday for a 7:00 p.m. conference game against ECC Compton Center...[more]

Cerritos College sophomore guard Nick Sanchez (Long Beach Wilson HS/Antelope Valley College) converted a four-point play at the buzzer to cap of a game filled with as many tempo changes as lead changes. He hit a three-pointer from the top of the key as time expired and then finished the improbable four-point play for an 87-86 South Coast Conference South Division win at Los Angeles Southwest College on Friday. The Falcons (7-11, 1-2), who led 75-61 with 6:62 left in the second half, trailed 86-83 after Dontae Clark netted a pair of free throws with 6.8 seconds left. But Sanchez, who finished with 11 points, drove to the top of the key and drained the three-pointer, while getting fouled by Bryce Layne. Sanchez then calmly converted the play with a free throw before being swarmed by teammates. The win snapped a four-game losing streak, while the Cougars dropped to 11-7 overall, and 1-3. Cerritos will now host El Camino College at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday at Gahr High School.

In a game filled with ebb and flow, the Falcons trailed by as many as seven in the second half (53-46), then led by 14 at 75-61 before LA Southwest went on a 23-8 run to hold a three-point advantage. Clark accounted for 10 points during their late run, which included four Cerritos turnovers that got them back in the game...[more]

01.12.11 - Another comeback attempt ends in loss
For the third straight game the Cerritos College men's basketball team came back from a double-digit second half deficit and for the third straight game, they came up short in the end. On Wednesday at Los Angeles Harbor in a South Coast Conference South Division game, the Falcons fell behind 20-4 to start the game and then trailed by as much as 17 points (41-24) with 14:57 left in the game. A steal and layup by freshman Robert Gill (Narbonne HS) with 2:21 got Cerritos (6-11, 0-2) to within 52-48. But the Seahawks (8-9, 3-0) converted 8-of-10 free throws down the stretch to finish with a 60-52 win. The team will try to snap their four-game losing streak on Friday when they travel to Los Angeles Southwest College for a 7:00 p.m. conference game...[more]

01.07.11 - Second half rally falls short against East LAPhoto courtesy of Kelli Francis. Cerritos College sophomore forward Addaryll Thomas scored three points in loss.
Down 43-25 with 16:28 remaining in the second half, the Cerritos College men's basketball team went on a 21-3 rally to knot the game at 46-46 with 5:40 remaining after freshman forward Darius Williams (Long Beach Jordan HS) slammed home a missed layup. But the Huskies, who relied on 23 points from guard Michael Cardenas, came away with a 58-55 South Coast Conference crossover game at Gahr High School on Friday night. The Falcons (6-10), who have now lost three straight, will travel to Los Angeles Harbor College for a 7:00 p.m. game on Wednesday in a South Division game.

East Los Angeles (6-10) turned that tie game into a 54-48 lead with 2:41 left until Williams (12 points) converted a layup to close the deficit to 57-56. But Cardenas, who netted all six of his second half free throws, sealed the game with two conversions with 12.8 seconds remaining. The Falcons saw freshman guard Keith Wiltz (J.W. North HS) and sophomore guard Kyli Crooms (Alta Loma HS/Vanguard University) each get off three-point attempts in their final possession, but neither fell and Cerritos was unable to extend the game into overtime...[more]

01.05.11 - Missed chances end up in loss for Falcons
On several occasions, the Cerritos College men's basketball team had a chance to either pull even or go ahead for the first time in the game during the second half of their South Coast Conference South Division game against Long Beach City College at Gahr High School on Wednesday night. But with each opportunity, the Falcons either missed a free throw or shot attempt, and ended up suffering an 86-77 setback, which drops their season record to 6-9 overall and 0-1 in SCC play. The team will now host East Los Angeles College at 8:00 p.m. on Friday in a conference crossover game at Gahr High...[more]

On the night, Chaffey out-rebounded Cerritos, 56-39, with 33 of those boards coming on the offensive side, which allowed numerous second chances for the Panthers and a subsequent loss for Cerritos.
