Despite a heavy rainfall the night
before, the Cerritos College men’s cross country team
was able to run as a cohesive unit and came in third
place at the Orange Coast Classic on Saturday morning.
The Falcons finished behind a very good San Bernardino
Valley College team, who had five of the top nine
finishers, while the host Pirates came in second place.
The team will now have a week off before competing in
the Southern California Preview meet, which will be held
October 6 at Irvine Park.
Just as he has
done his entire Cerritos career, sophomore Daniel
Clifford-Sorenson (Lakewood HS) was the first
Falcon to cross the finish line, as he placed eighth out
of the 85 runners with a time of 21:19.30. He did have
two of his teammates finish within 1:30 of his time, as
sophomore Jonathan Dillard (Lakewood HS)
came in 17th place in 21:40 and sophomore
Casey McCombs (Long Beach Wilson HS) finished
24th with a time of 22:13.80. The duo of
sophomore Miguel Ortega (John Glenn HS)
and freshman Armando Pina (Kennedy HS)
finished right at the same time, with Ortega clocked in
22:49.10 and Pina in 22:49.50. Those five helped
comprise the Falcon team scoring.
Several others
ran very well despite the conditions, with freshmen
Erick Ordonez (Loara HS) coming in 34th
in 22:58.00 and Giovanni Popoca finishing in
23:47.30, good for 40th place. Also running
for Cerritos were sophomore Joseph Aranda (Norwalk
HS; 42nd place; 23:58.20) and freshman
Qualaun Reed (Cabrillo HS; 60th;
25:02.02). |
