The Cerritos
College men's cross country team had all five of
their scoring runners finish within 14 places of
each other, which helped allow the team to come in
fifth place at the Southern California Championships
on Friday at Kern County Soccer Park in Bakersfield.
The Falcons, who finished with 214 team points,
trailed only San Bernardino Valley College (52 team
points), Orange Coast College (105), San Diego Mesa
(126) and Mt. San Antonio College (212). The team
also edged Riverside College, who placed sixth with
216 team points. After missing out on competing as a
team in the State Championships last year, Cerritos
will now send their squad to Woodward Park in Fresno
on November 22 for the final meet of the season.
Freshman
Angel
Aguirre (Valencia HS) got
things going for the Falcons by coming in 34th place
out of the 202 runners over the 4-mile course, as he
finished in a time of 20:56.83. Not far behind was
freshman
Roman Pena (Valencia
HS), who ran his best race of the year and
finished in 40th place in a time of 21:02.05.
Sophomore
Geovanni
Popoca (Valencia HS) was
clocked in 21:04.67, which put him in 42nd place
overall and was the third Falcon to finish the race.
Keeping the bunching intact were sophomore
Qualaun Reed
(Cabrillo HS), who came in 48th place in
21:08.55, while freshman
Torion
Bailey (Mayfair HS) helped the
team with their fifth place finish with a great
finish of 21:09.89, which put him in 50th place and
was the final runner to comprise the team's score.
Cerritos also had
sophomore
Armando Pina
(Kennedy HS; 94th place, 21:43.40) and
freshman
Jose
Amador (El Rancho HS; 121st
place, 22:19.66) competing in the race.
