With 24 teams
competing in the state championships at Fresno on
Saturday, the Cerritos College men's cross country
team placed 11th with 298 team points. Last year,
the Falcons sent one runner, so the team qualifying
was a marked improvement. San Bernardino Valley
College won the championship with 50 team points,
while two South Coast Conference teams finished
ahead of Cerritos, with Mt. San Antonio College
coming in fifth place with 210 team points, while El
Camino College finished with 293 team points, which
placed them ninth.
Sophomore
Geovanni
Popoca (Valencia HS) was the
first Falcon to finish the race and came in 42nd
place out of 199 runners with a time of 21:14.28. A
mere 14 seconds separated the next three Cerritos
runners, with freshman
Torion
Bailey (Mayfair HS) coming in
63rd place in 21:29.71, while freshman
Angel
Aguirre (Valencia HS) finished
in 21:35.11, good for 70th place. Sophomore
Roman Pena
(Valencia HS) finished the trio of runners
in a time of 21:43.56, which placed him 79th
overall.
The final runner
to comprise the team score was sophomore
Armando Pina
(Kennedy HS), who came in 106th place with
a time of 22:03.00. Rounding out the seven runners
that represented the Falcons were sophomore
Qualaun Reed
(Cabrillo HS), who came in 129th place in
22:17.90 and freshman
Jose
Amador (El Rancho HS) with a
time of 22:47.43, which put him in 160th place.
