The Cerritos
College men's cross country team finished strong on
the four-mile course at Bakersfield College in the
Southern California Preview Meet on Saturday. The
Falcons, who comprised 313 team points, held on for
ninth place out of the 36 schools that competed.
Orange Coast College won the meet with 92 team
points, while South Coast Conference opponents Mt.
San Antonio College and El Camino College finished
fourth and fifth place, respectively. Cerritos will
now head south to run in the UC San Diego
Invitational at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday.
Leading the pack
for the Falcons was sophomore Geovanni
Popoca (Valencia HS), who placed
21st overall with a solid time of 21:16, along with
two other runners. It was freshman Angel
Aguirre (Valencia HS) to finish
next for Cerritos with a time of 21:34, good for
37th place overall. There was a big drop-off before
the next runner secured team points, with sophomore
Armando Pina (Kennedy HS)
placing 75th overall with a time of 22:08. Rounding
out the team scoring for the Falcons were freshmen
Patrick Schwab (Kennedy HS),
who came in 96th place overall in 22:24, while Jose
Amador (El Rancho HS) finished in 22:30, good for
108th place.
The team had six
more runners competing in the invitational, which
included sophomore Qualaun Reed (Cabrillo
HS; 22:42, 127th place), freshman Roman
Pena (Valencia HS; 22:44, 128th
place); sophomore Dashan Craft (Warren
HS; 22:50, 138th place); freshman John
Gaynor (Lakewood HS; 23:03, 154th
place); freshman Russell Kelly (Loara
HS; 23:35, 187th place) and freshman
Torion Bailey (Mayfair HS; 24:20,
224th place).
