With a chance to
win it all with about a mile left in the South Coast
Conference Championships on Friday at Columbia Park
in Torrance, the Cerritos College men's cross
country team was looking to pull an upset. Ranked
10th in the state, the Falcons finished up in third
place with 70 team points and trailed fifth-ranked
Mt. San Antonio College, who won the meet with 39
team points and sixth-ranked El Camino College, who
placed second with 58 points. Next up for the team
will be the Southern California Championships, which
will take place next Saturday in Bakersfield.
Freshman
Angel
Aguirre (Valencia HS)
continued to improve each week and showed it again
with a seventh place finish out of 81 runners with a
time of 21:37. Running hard from the outset was
sophomore
Geovanni
Popoca (Valencia HS), who
finished the 4-mile course in 21:47, which put him
11th overall, while the duo of freshman
Torion
Bailey (Mayfair HS) and
sophomore
Qualaun Reed
(Warren HS) were instrumental in the team's
third place finish. Bailey finished in 13th place in
21:49, while Reed was right behind in 21:55, good
for 14th place. The final racer to give the Falcons
their team score was sophomore
Armando Pina
(Kennedy HS), who placed 25th
overall in 22:22.
Cerritos had five
other runners that included freshman
Kyle Bogda
(El Dorado HS; 30th place, 22:36), freshman
John Gaynor (Lakewood HS; 34th
place, 22:51), freshman
Patrick
Schwab (Kennedy HS; 35th
place, 22:53), sophomore
Dashan
Craft (Warren HS; 41st place,
23:09) and freshman
Russell
Kelly (Loara HS; 48th place,

On the strength of
their performance at the conference championships,
the top four Falcon runners earned All-South Coast
Conference honors.
