In one of the top
races in Southern California, the Cerritos College
men's cross country team showed how much better they
are getting, as they came in ninth place out of the
25 teams that competed. The Falcons finished with
258 team points, while powerhouse San Bernardino
Valley College won the invitational with 44 points.
Two South Coast Conference team finished ahead of
Cerritos, as Mt. San Antonio College (2nd Place) and
El Camino College (5th place) were joined by the
Falcons and three other teams from the conference.
The team will get a week off at the midway point in
the season before heading to Bakersfield for the
Southern California Preview Meet on October 3rd.
As he has for most
of the season, sophomore Geovanni Popoca
(Valencia HS) led the team, as he came in
28th place out of 218 runners with a time of
21:19.49 over the four-mile course. In an attempt to
show his improvement on a tough course, sophomore
Qualaun Reed (Cabrillo HS)
posted a time of 21:33.50, which put him in 40th
place overall. There was a bit of a drop-off with
the next three Cerritos runners to comprise the team
score, with sophomore Armando Pina
(Kennedy HS) the third Falcon to cross the
finish line. He was clocked in 21:56.78, which put
him in 58th place, while freshmen Angel
Aguirre (Valencia HS) had an
off-week and placed 66th overall with a time of
22:03.80. The final runner to account for the team's
score was freshman Torion Bailey (Mayfair
HS), who finished the race in 22:16.12, good
for 79th place overall.
The remainder of
the team consisted of freshmen Russell Kelly
(Loara HS; 86th place; 22:25.06),
Jose Amador (El Rancho HS; 91st
place; 22:28.65), Patrick Schwab (Kennedy
HS; 95th place; 22:38.17), Kyle Bogda
(El Dorado HS; 107th place; 22:54.15) and
John Gaynor (Lakewood HS;
115th place; 23:17.60).
