Cerritos College
freshman cross country runner Jason Zapien
made the most of his first collegiate race, as he
led the pack and posted a first place finish at the
UC San Diego Opener on Saturday. Zapien, who beat
out UCSD's Brian Knight by just three seconds,
finished in a time of 22.49.7, which helped the
Falcons come in second place out of the three teams
that competed. As a team, Cerritos had 18 of the 37
entries in the race and finished with 44 team
points. The host Triton won the meet with 20 teams
points, with Point Loma Nazarene University coming
in third place.
After Zapien, the
next Falcon runner to finish was sophomore Angel
Aguirre, who placed eighth with a time or 23:25.7,
with sophomore John Martinez (Artesia
HS) in 10th overall at 23:36.6. Freshman
Gabriel Hilbert was the third
Cerritos runner, as he came in 12th overall in
23:53.3, while sophomore Patrick Schwab
(Kennedy HS) closed out the team's scoring
with a 14th overall finish in a time of 23:56.9.
Just missing out on sharing in the team scoring was
sophomore Torion Bailey
(Mayfair HS), who came in 15th place
overall at 23:59.8.
