With just 35
points separating second place from sixth place at
the Southern California Championships at Mt. San
Antonio College on Friday, the Cerritos College
men's cross country team did their best for some
late race kicking to try and move up a place or two.
But the Falcons wound up in sixth place with 169
team points and will now advance to the State
Championships, which will take place on November 21
at Woodward Park in Fresno. San Bernardino Valley
College won the championship with 56 team points,
while Cerritos was just edged out by Orange Coast
College (134 team points), Glendale College (140),
Mt. San Antonio College (160) and El Camino College
(165). The latter two are members of the South Coast
Conference with Cerritos.
In completing the
four-mile course, sophomore
Angel
Aguirre (Valencia HS) and
freshman
Jason Zapien (El Rancho HS)
finished two seconds apart. Aguirre was 19th overall
in a time of 21:23, while Zapien placed 20th out of
the 201 runners in a time of 21:25. Sophomore
Patrick Schwab (Kennedy HS)
was the third Falcon to finish the race, as he came
in 31st place in 21:45. Rounding out the top five
runners that comprised the team score were freshman
Gabriel Hilbert (Kennedy HS),
who came in 33rd place in 21:48, while sophomore
John Martinez (Artesia HS) was
clocked in 22:27, good for 68th place.
Also running for
Cerritos were sophomore

Kelly (Loara HS), who placed
93rd in a time of 22:46, while sophomore Torion
Bailey (Mayfair HS) finished
in 23:45, good for 146th place.
