Led by a group of
sophomores, the Cerritos College men's cross country
team finished fourth out of 26 schools at the Fresno
Invitational on Saturday. The Falcons, who compiled
189 team points, had sophomores finish in five of
the top seven spots. Orange Coast College won the
meet with 36 team points, while Glendale College
(114 team points) and College of the Sequoias (147)
finished ahead of Cerritos. The squad will now
compete in the Orange Coast Classic on Saturday at
Fairview Park in Costa Mesa.
The meet on
Saturday was run at Woodward Park in Fresno, so all
of the sophomores had a chance to experience the
course twice, which helped in the team's strong
finish. Sophomore
Patrick
Schwab (Kennedy HS) ran the
four-mile course in a time of 21:34, which put him
in 12th place out of 246 runners. He was close to a
top 10 finish, but was beat out by three seconds.
Right behind Schwab was freshman
Gabriel
Hilbert (Kennedy HS), as his
time of 21:45 put him in 20th place overall.
The top five
runners help comprise the team's overall score, and
the trio of sophomores
John
Martinez (Artesia HS) and Angel
Aguirre (Valencia HS), along
with freshman
Jason Zapien (El Rancho HS)
ran strong races to account for the fourth place
finish. Martinez was the 52nd runner in a time of
22:19, followed by Aguirre's time of 22.21, good for
55th place, while Zapien was clocked in 22:26, good
for 59th place.
The Falcons had
more entries in the race than any other school,
as 13 other runners competed. Included in that group
were
Russell
Kelly (Loara HS, 76th place,
22:40),
Kyle Bogda (El
Dorado HS, 109th place, 23:08),
Chris Lopez
(John Glenn HS, 117th place, 23:16),
Torion Bailey (Mayfair HS, 134th
place, 23:32),
Thomas
Jimenez (El Rancho HS, 135th
place, 23:33),
Adam Arambula (Kennedy HS,
137th place, 23:38),
Emilio
Gonzalez (El Rancho HS, 139th
place, 23:41),
Jose
Amador (El Rancho HS, 141st
place, 23:44), Ceasar Garcia (168th
place, 24:34),
Jesus
Peralta (John Glenn HS, 186th
place, 25:10),
Chris Diaz
(El Rancho HS, 204th place, 26:07), Ghandy
Reyes (John Glenn HS, 211th
place, 26:22) and
