At the start of their season-opening
game, the Cerritos College men's soccer team came out
and put four quick shots on goal against Golden West
College at home on Tuesday. However, it was the Rustlers
who made the most of their limited opportunities, as
they scored two goals from close range to post a 2-0
victory. Next up for the Falcons is the tough Hartnell
Tournament, which runs from Friday through Sunday.
For the Falcons, they made just two
mistakes in the game and they both resulted in Golden
West tallies. In the 16th minute, Falcon freshman
goalkeeper
Ivan Mercado (Paramount
HS) was unable to control a first shot, but
Javier Ramirez was there to put the rebound in for a 1-0
advantage. In the second half, the Cerritos defense
attempted to send the ball back to Mercado, but the ball
was mishandled and Jeffrey Cervantes gave the Rustlers a
2-0 lead they would not relinquish.
Playing with a freshman-dominated
team, Cerritos used quite a few players and did keep the
pressure on for the majority of the game. They worked
Golden West goalkeeper hard, forcing Erik Gonzales to
make four saves, including a couple late in the game.
Sophomore
Adrian Gonzalez (Lynwood
HS), who sat out last season after being
named the South Coast Conference Most Valuable Player,
came on with 29 minutes remaining and the tempo of the
game changed completely. He pushed the ball hard at the
Golden West net and created several scoring changes and
three corner kicks. However, he was unable to put one in
the net and the team suffered a loss in their first
contest. |
