Looking to stay within striking
distance of first place in the South Coast Conference,
the Cerritos College men's soccer team scored three
second half goals to post a 3-0 home win against Los
Angeles Harbor College on Friday. The win moved the
Falcons, ranked #2 in the state, to 14-3-4 on the year
and they are now 8-1-3 in conference action, good for 27
points and at least a share of second place. Not only
did the win extend their unbeaten streak to eight games
(7-0-1), it kept them close to first place Long Beach
City College (27 points entering the day) and second
place Mt. San Antonio College (25 points entering the
day), who faced each other today. Cerritos will host
Long Beach City next Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. and then close
out the regular season next Friday at El Camino College.
It was a tightly played first half,
with both teams getting a couple of chances to score,
until the Falcons came out in the second half and struck
in the first five minutes. Sophomore defender
Marco Pulido
(South Gate HS),
one of the top defenders in the state, showed his
offensive skills, as he found a crease in the LA Harbor
team and pushed the ball up the field. He sent a pass
to sophomore midfielder
Jose Diaz
(Salesian HS),
who scored on Seahawks goalkeeper Jaime Del Toro in the
50th minute. Cerritos kept the pressure on and found
themselves in scoring position until Del Toro made a big
save on a shot attempt. But as the players were clearing
out, the goalkeeper gave freshman defender
Jesus Ochoa
(Paramount HS)
a hard shove that knocked him down, earning Cerritos a
penalty kick. Freshman midfielder
Billy
Gutierrez (Huntington
Park HS) telegraphed his penalty kick
attempt and Del Toro made the save.
The Falcons were given a corner kick
after the penalty kick save and freshman midfielder
Ivan Perez
(Chaparral, NV HS)
sent in a beautiful pass to freshman forward
Andy Rico
(Lynwood HS),
who headed the ball into the net for a goal and a 2-0
lead in the 67th minute. Cerritos picked up an insurance
goal, as Gutierrez made up for his penalty kick miss.
Sophomore forward
Joshua Meyer
(Cerritos HS)
sent a harmless cross-field pass to Gutierrez, who
lofted a soft kick toward the net that was just out of
reach for Del Toro and it gave the team their 3-0 edge.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Miguel Lopez
(Vocational Tech,
NV HS), coming off an incredible performance
against Mt. San Antonio three days ago, posted his fifth
shutout of the season, as he made two saves. |
