Looking to move into a first place
tie in the South Coast Conference, the Cerritos College
men's soccer team finished in a 1-1 tie with Long Beach
City College on Tuesday afternoon. With the draw, the
Falcons, rated #2 in the state, are now 8-1-4 in the SCC,
good for 28 points, while the Vikings, rated #4, are now
10-2-1 for 31 points. With just one regular season game
remaining, Cerritos (14-3-5 overall) will host El Camino
College on Friday at home at 3:00 p.m., while LBCC will
travel to East Los Angeles College for a 6:00 p.m. game.
In order for Cerritos to earn a share of the title with
Long Beach , they must win, while the Vikings must lose.
Long Beach took an early 1-0 lead in
the game when Viking goalkeeper Brendon Welch sent a
long clearing kick right to Arturo Guizar, who let the
ball bounce once before lifting a soft shot over Falcon
goalkeeper
Miguel Lopez
(Vocational Tech,
NV HS), who came out of the goal too far.
The score remained that way until the 73rd minute, when
Cerritos forward
Brian Alvarez
(Salesian HS)
was tackled in the box by Jesse Sandoval, earning
Cerritos a penalty kick. Sophomore forward
Joshua Meyer
(Cerritos HS)
scored, which put the score at 1-1.
It appeared as though the penalty
kick struck a nerve in the Falcon offense, as they
turned up the heat and put themselves in positions for
high quality shots on goal. However, the Vikings were up
to the task and shut many of the chances down before
they could materialize. But, in the 87th minute, a
mix-up on defense gave Falcon sophomore forward
Jessi Lopez
(South Gate HS)
a shot an an open net from 20 yards out. His shot went
high and neither team had a chance to score after that.
In the first half, Long Beach was
presented with a defensive lapse of their own, as
Cerritos tried to draw the Vikings offside on a ball,
only to leave Lopez facing a 3-on-0 situation, but came
up with a diving save. Viking midfielder Willie Obregon
was one of the main culprits in turning Cerritos away in
their offensive attacks, while he also did a solid job
of sending the ball into offensive situations for Long
Beach City.
Lopez finished the game with four
saves, while Welch had five. |
