With their 1-0 South Coast Conference
home win against El Camino College on Friday afternoon,
the Cerritos College men's soccer team will now wait for
the outcome of the Long Beach City College game at East
Los Angeles College this evening to find out if they
finished the regular season in second place or tied for
first place. The Falcons finished the regular season
with a 15-3-5 overall record, while they ended 9-1-4 in
SCC place, good for 31 points. Should East LA defeat the
Vikings tonight, there would be a tie for first place
and the two teams will share the championship. Cerritos
will open the Southern California Regional Playoffs as
the #2-seeded team and will receive a bye in the first
round before hosting an opponent to be determined in the
second round on November 21.
After a tightly contested first half,
that carried over into the second half, the Falcons
finally took advantage of a Warrior error and scored the
game's lone goal. Freshman midfielder
Billy
Gutierrez (Huntington
Park HS) took a hard shot at the El Camino
goal that was stopped by keeper Arnold Villalobos. The
ball came loose and El Camino defender Luis Bignone
tried to get the ball out of trouble, but freshman
midfielder
Bryan Mejia
(Montebello HS)
was there to jump on the ball and scored the goal.
Both teams had their chances to
score, but both goalkeepers were on their game, with
Villalobos and Falcon sophomore
Miguel Lopez
(Vocational Tech,
NV HS) each making five saves. Offensively,
Cerritos looked to get the ball to either Gutierrez or
sophomore
Joshua Meyer
(Cerritos HS),
while talented sophomore defender
Marco Pulido
(South Gate HS)
moved up into the attack several times and also was the
anchor of the defense. Freshmen defenders
Eusebio
Alvarez (Western HS) and
Ivan Perez
(Chaparral, NV HS)
were instrumental in countering any El Camino attack, as
they looked to primarily get the ball to John Massaquoi.
Cerritos showed their defensive
prowess that helped them earn 10 shutouts on the year,
with Lopez picking up his sixth of the season. |
