Freshman forward
Brian Alvarez
(Salesian HS)
scored two goals and assisted on another to lead the
Cerritos College men's soccer team to a 3-1 1st Round
Southern California Regional Playoff win against Santa
Barbara City College at home on Saturday. The Falcons
(16-3-5), seeded #5 in the playoffs, will now travel to
Santa Ana College on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. to take on the
#4-seeded Dons. Santa Ana, who received a bye in the
first round, is also the two-time defending state
champion and defeated the Falcons in the state
championship game back in 2004.
It didn't take long for the Falcon
offense to strike, as freshman midfielder
Bryan Mejia
(Montebello HS)
left a pass for Alvarez, who drilled the ball past
Vaquero goalkeeper Isreal Santillon for a quick 1-0
lead. It stayed that way into the second half, when
Alvarez had a helper on a goal by freshman midfielder
Billy
Gutierrez (Huntington
Park HS). In the 54th minute, Alvarez
dribbled the ball toward the Santa Barbara City goal and
sent a heel pass to Gutierrez, where he scored for his
sixth goal of the year.
Cerritos put the game out of reach in
the 77th minute after Alvarez stole a pass and drilled a
shot into the lower left corner for his second goal of
the game. The Vaqueros did get on the board in the 82nd
minute when Hugo Pizano scored into the lower left side
past sophomore goalkeeper
Miguel Lopez
(Vocational Tech,
NV HS), who made three saves on the day.
The Falcons held possession of the
ball the majority of the game, and shut down any Vaquero
attacks with the stellar defense, led by sophomore
Marco Pulido
(South Gate HS),
as well as freshman
Eusebio
Alvarez (Western
HS). Offensively, Cerritos had another
outstanding opportunity to score, as freshman midfielder
Hector
Quezada (Gahr
HS) got off a shot in the box, only to have
Santillon made a save with one hand as he was twisting
his body back towards the play. On the ensuing rebound,
sophomore forward
Jessi Lopez
(South Gate HS)
missed on a great scoring chance. |
