Looking to extend their unbeaten
streak to 10 games, the Cerritos College men's soccer
team needed to come back from a 1-0 deficit against
Pasadena City College in a South Coast Conference road
match on Tuesday. After the Lancers went up 1-0 in the
51st minute, the Falcons responded on a goal by freshman
forward
Andy Rico
(Lynwood
HS)
in the 58th minute and secured a 1-1 tie. With the draw,
Cerritos is now 7-2-3 overall and 1-0-2 in conference
play, while they are now 7-0-3 in the last 10 games. The
Falcons will get one of their toughest tests of the
season when they play host to Mt. San Antonio College on
Friday at 4:00 p.m. Both teams are near the top in the
state rankings and the winner of the game will have an
inside track towards capturing the conference title.
In the game against Pasadena City,
Falcon head coach
Benny Artiaga
stated, "This was a typical Pasadena home game, where
they play the ball in the air hoping to capitalize on a
throw in, set piece or corner kick. Fortunately, we were
able to counter with our two big bodies, Andy Rico and
(sophomore forward)
Joshua Meyer
(Cerritos
HS),
who neutralized their aerial attack."
After Sargis Agaronian gave the
Lancers a 1-0 lead, the Falcons struck eight minutes
later when Rico sent in a header after a nice flick pass
from Meyer to freshman
Bryan Mejia
(Montebello
HS).
Mejia then one-timed the ball into the box where Rico
scored, his third of the early conference season.
Cerritos had a chance to take a late lead, but a free
kick by freshman
Ivan Perez
(Chaparral,
NV HS)
hit the post from 31 yards out in the 80th minute. In
the 83rd minute, freshman
Billy
Gutierrez
(Huntington
Park HS)
sent a great diagonal pass to sophomore
Jose Diaz
(Salesian
HS),
who found a streaking
Eric
Gonzalez
(Huntington
Park HS)
unmarked in front of an open net, but his shot was
offline.
All the while, freshman goalkeeper
Ivan Mercado
(Paramount
HS)
was standing tall in goal for the Falcons, and made five
saves, while Cerritos outshot the Lancers, 16-12. |
