The Cerritos College men's soccer
team saw their 10-game unbeaten streak come to an end
after Mt. San Antonio College posted a 2-1 win against
the Falcons at Cerritos on Friday afternoon. Heading
into the game, the Falcons were 7-0-3 after losing their
first two games of the season and now drop to 7-3-3
overall and 1-1-2 in conference action. For the
Mounties, they improve to 12-1-1 overall and 3-1-0 in
conference play. Cerritos will look to start a new
streak on Tuesday when they travel to Los Angeles Harbor
College for a 6:00 p.m. start.
It was a game of missed opportunities
for the Falcons, as they had five good scoring chances,
but came away empty. After falling behind in the 42nd
minute, it appeared as though Mt. SAC would control the
tempo of the game. But, to the credit of the Falcons,
they fought back and worked themselves into consecutive
scoring chances. They jumped on a chance in the 65th
minute, as sophomore forward
Jessi Lopez
(South Gate HS)
sent a soft touch pass into the middle of the box for
sophomore midfielder
Jose Diaz
(Salesian HS),
who headed the ball into the net to tie the game a 1-1.
Cerritos kept up the pressure for the
next several minutes, but after the Mounties were able
to clear the ball out, they made an offensive push at
the Falcon net. After a foul was called just outside the
Falcon box, the Mounties used one quick pass and scored
into the fall corner past Cerritos goalkeeper
Miguel Lopez
(Vocational Tech,
NV HS) in the 74th minute.
As the game got closer to the end,
the Falcons turned up the heat, as both sophomore
forwards
Joshua Meyer
(Cerritos HS)
and Jessi Lopez, as well as freshman forward
Andy Rico
(Lynwood HS)
each had great chances to score, but could not get the
bal in the net. On the day, Miguel Lopez made two saves,
while Mounties goalkeeper Robert Carrillo, a former
Falcon keeper, made five stops. |
