Cerritos College freshman forward
Brian Alvarez
(Salesian HS)
scored twice to lead the Falcon men's soccer team to a
crucial 2-1 South Coast Conference win at Long Beach
City College on Friday afternoon. With the win, the
Falcons are now 9-3-3 overall and 3-1-2 in conference
play, good for third place, while the Vikings slipped to
9-2-2 on the year and remain in second place with a
4-2-0 mark in the SCC. The team will now travel to El
Camino College on Tuesday for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
An early lead was all the Falcons
needed to build their confidence, with the first goal
coming on a set piece. On a corner kick, freshman
midfielder
Ivan Perez
(Chaparral, NV HS)
sent the ball toward the net, where the ball was
deflected by Viking goalkeeper Brendon Welch and in
front of Alvarez, who banged the ball into the net for
his fourth goal of the year. It didn't take long for
Alvarez to collect his fifth goal of the season when he
received a pass from freshman midfielder
Bryan Mejia
(Montebello HS),
who rushed the ball downfield along the left sideline.
Mejia then sent a crossing pass into the middle for
Alvarez, who tucked the ball into the net for a
comfortable 2-0 lead 11 minutes into the match.
The score remained 2-0 until midway
through the second half, when Viking midfielder Chris
Overton sent a pass to forward Aaron Gutcher for a
breakaway and he scored past Falcon goalkeeper
Miguel Lopez
(Vocational Tech,
NV HS) in the 71st minute. Cerritos
controlled the ball for the majority of the game and
kept any chances by the Vikings to a minimum.
Lopez made four saves on the day for
the Falcons, as did Welch. |
