Sophomore forward
Joshua Meyer
(Cerritos HS)
scored one goal and assisted on two others to help lead
the Cerritos College men's soccer team to a 4-1 South
Coast Conference victory over East Los Angeles College
at home on Friday afternoon. With the win, the Falcons
hold onto third place with a 5-1-2 record for 17 points,
while the Huskies (7-6-5 overall) dropped to 2-4-2 in
the SCC for eight points. On the year, Cerritos is
11-3-3 and they have the second highest power rating in
Southern California. The team will try to extend their
four-game winning streak when they travel to face ECC
Compton Center on Tuesday for a 4:00 p.m. game.
East Los Angeles put early offensive
pressure on the Falcon defense, who withstood the test
until they were able to make their move. Right before
halftime, sophomore midfielder
Eric
Gonzalez (Huntington
Park HS) scored after a long direct kick was
saved by Huskie goalkeeper Martin Romero. But he gave up
a rebound and Gonzalez was right there to put it away
for the score. Although that would be the only scoring
in the first half, the Falcons started to turn up the
heat offensively and came out in the second half with a
more aggressive approach, which paid early dividends.
In the 53rd minute, Cerritos set up
for a corner kick that was headed by Meyer, whose shot
rolled along the goal line. Before Romero could clear
the ball away, sophomore forward
Jessi Lopez
(South Gate HS)
was there to tip the ball into the net for a 2-0
advantage. Just three minutes later, Meyer sent a lead
pass deep into the Huskie end, where freshman midfielder
Bryan Mejia
(Montebello HS)
was able to outrun three Huskie defenders and chipped
the ball past Romero, who attempted to come out to cut
off the angle.
The fourth goal for the Falcons was a
thing of beauty off the foot of freshman defender
Ivan Perez
(Chaparral,
NV HS). On a direct kick from beyond the
midfield line, Perez sent the ball right to Meyer, who
used his 6-3 frame to leap over everybody to head the
ball into the net for a goal. That would be plenty of
offense for the defensive-minded Falcons, even after
East LA ruined the shutout on a goal with five minutes
remaining in the game. Cerritos had several other
chances to score, but just missed out, as freshman
midfielder
Hector
Quezada (Gahr
HS) had two great chances, but his shots
just missed the net. On defense, sophomore
Marco Pulido
(South Gate HS)
showed why he is one of the top defenders in the state,
as he used his body and skills to help shut down Huskie
attacks and clear the ball out of danger.
Sophomore
Miguel Lopez
(Vocational Tech,
NV HS) started the game in goal for the
Falcons and did a masterful job, as he made three saves.
He was replaced by freshman
Ivan Mercado
(Paramount HS)
in the 63rd minute, and he made one save, while allowing
the lone Huskie goal. |
