The Cerritos College men's soccer
team took a 2-0 lead in their South Coast Conference
game at ECC Compton Center on Tuesday afternoon and it
appeared as though that would be enough offense to win
the game. However, the Tartars scored two late goals to
forge a tie with the Falcons, who are currently ranked
#2 in Southern California. The draw snapped a four-game
winning streak, but the team still has a five-game
unbeaten streak intact. Cerritos will now host Pasadena
City College on Friday at 4:00 p.m. in another
conference match.
The Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the
25th minute of the game when freshman defender
Ivan Perez
(Chaparral,
NV HS)
sent a corner kick, which got through the defense for a
waiting
Brian Alvarez
(Salesian
HS).
After making a great move to get control the ball, he
drilled a shot into the net for the team's first goal.
Alvarez had a hand in the second goal, making a great
move from the touch line all the way to the goal, where
he was fouled inside the box for a penalty kick.
Freshman midfielder
Billy
Gutierrez
(Huntington
Park HS)
made good on the shot in the 38th minute for a 2-0
Falcon lead.
However, the Tartars turned up their
offense and scored in the 65th and 78th minutes against
freshman goalkeeper
Ivan Mercado
(Paramount
HS).
On both goals, ECC Compton Center scored off set pieces
with the first being a long ball into the box that was
flicked into the goal. On the second, the Tartars scored
off a direct free kick from 18 yards out that went into
the net.
On the day, Mercado made one save,
while the Falcons had numerous opportunities to score,
but just couldn't get the ball into the net. |
