After a disheartening 2-2 tie against
ECC Compton Center on Tuesday, the Cerritos College
men's soccer team was not about to let their 2-1
halftime lead slip away against Pasadena City College at
home on Friday. The Falcons picked up an insurance goal
in the 78th minute to post a 3-1 South Coast Conference
win. With the victory, Cerritos is now 12-3-4 overall
and 6-1-3 in the conference, while the Lancers fell to
8-6-5 overall and 3-4-3 in the SCC. Next up for Cerritos
will be a crucial game at Mt. San Antonio College on
Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. The Mounties, who handed Cerritos
their lone conference loss, sits in first place while
the Falcons are currently in third place.
Cerritos took a 1-0 lead in their
game against the Lancers on a goal by sophomore forward
Jessi Lopez
(South Gate HS)
off a pass by sophomore forward
Joshua Meyer
(Cerritos HS)
in the 13th minute. The early tally set the tone for the
game and the Falcons looked to keep up their pressure by
attacking the Lancer defense every opportunity they had.
Several times, Cerritos was called for a close offside
after sophomore goalkeeper
Miguel Lopez
(Vocational Tech,
NV HS) sent long balls over the midfield
line, looking to connect with a streaking Falcon player.
On three separate occasions, Cerritos was called for
offside.
Pasadena City tied the game in the
37th minute on a corner kick by
Nigel Orozco which landed in front of Greg Altounian,
who scored past Lopez to tie the game. But, right before
halftime, Falcon defender
Marco Pulido
(South
Gate HS) rushed the
ball up the right side of the field and sent a
picture-perfect pass into the middle of the box to
freshman forward
Edson
Portillo (Gahr
HS),
who scored the eventual game-winning goal.
In the second half, Meyer had several
scoring chances and finally picked up a goal in the 78th
minute on a header 10 feet outside the goal off a pass
by freshman forward
Andy Rico
(Lynwood
HS).
Rico had a chance to score later on when he went in with
Meyer all alone, but Lancer goalkeeper Chris Terrones
made the save. On the day, the Falcons out-shot Pasadena
City, 21-6. |
