Riding the momentum of their two wins
at the Hartnell Tournament this past weekend, the
Cerritos College men's soccer team recorded an 8-0
non-conference home win against San Bernardino Valley
College on Tuesday. The win was their third in a row and
second straight shutout. Next up for Cerritos will be a
game at Cypress College next Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.
From the start of the game, the
Falcons put the heat on the Wolverine goalkeeper and
missed two great scoring opportunities within a
six-minute span. But in the 29th minute, sophomore
forward
Joshua Meyer
(Cerritos HS)
took a nice pass from freshman forward
Costas
Sanchez (Columbus
HS) in the box and put the ball in the net.
Meyer, who will be expected to pick up the scoring slack
with the loss of forward
Adrian
Gonzalez (Lynwood
HS), teamed up with Sanchez just three
minutes later to give the team a 2-0 lead. Meyer's pass
to Sanchez was at close range, and his shot went under
the keeper for a goal.
Meyer, who missed out on scoring
twice in a loss this past weekend, didn't miss his
chances in this game, as he picked up his second goal of
the game in the 40th minute right after he hit the post.
From that point forward, the scoring was taken care of
by freshman forward
Brian Alvarez
(Salesian HS),
who scored a natural hat trick to start the second half.
He picked up a quick goal to start the second half on a
pass from sophomore midfielder
Jose Diaz
(Salesian HS)
in the 47th minute and then scored his second in the
71st minute unassisted. His hat trick was completed in
the 75th minute after he received a nice pass from
freshman midfielder
Billy
Gutierrez (Huntington
Park HS). The scoring was closed out in the
84th minute when Sanchez collected his second goal on a
rebound off an original shot by sophomore midfielder
Eric
Gonzalez (Huntington
Park HS).
The lopsided score game the coaching
staff an opportunity to use everybody on the bench and
the relentless offensive attack showed them that even
with the loss of Gonzalez for an undetermined amount of
time, the team can still be a threat offensively. |
