Looking to exact a little revenge for
their ousting from the Southern California Regional
Playoffs last season, the Cerritos College men's soccer
team scored two first half goals and went on to post a
2-0 victory over Rio Hondo College in a non-conference
game at Cerritos on Wednesday. The win was the fifth in
the row for the Falcons, who are now 5-2-0 on the season
and they will play host to Oxnard College at 4:00 p.m.
on Friday.
Cerritos saw their season come to an
end last year at the hands of the Roadrunners, who
posted a 2-0 score. They allowed a goal early in the
game and then a late tally, as they were unable to
generate any offense. But this season, they put an end
to that in just the second minute of the game, as
sophomore midfielder
Victor Roman
(Loara HS)
scored after receiving a pass from freshman forward
Brian Alvarez
(Salesian HS)
just outside the box and beat Rio Hondo goalkeeper
Gabriel Barriaga. Then, midway through the first half,
the Falcons took a 2-0 lead when sophomore forward
Joshua Meyer
(Cerritos HS)
continued his torrid scoring pace, as he picked up his
seventh goal of the season in the 24th minute on a pass
from Roman.
However, Rio Hondo continued to put
pressure on the Cerritos defense, but the backline play
of sophomore
Marco Pulido
(South Gate HS),
along with freshmen
Ivan Perez
(Chaparral, NV HS),
Eusebio
Alvarez (Western
HS) and
Jesus Ochoa
(Paramount HS)
helped stop any scoring chances. Freshman goalkeeper
Ivan Mercado
(Paramount HS)
recorded four saves on the day and picked up his fourth
straight shutout of the year. |
