In a game that had a playoff
atmosphere to it, both the Cerritos College and El
Camino College Compton Center men's soccer teams did
their best to position themselves for any offensive
opportunities. Both had their chances, but were turned
away by some nifty goalkeeping, as the schools played to
a 0-0 tie in a South Coast Conference game played at
Cerritos on Friday afternoon. With the draw, the Falcons
are now 7-2-2 on the season and 1-0-1 in conference
action, while the Tartars are 2-1-2 and 0-0-1. Cerritos
will now travel to Pasadena City College next Monday for
a 3:00 p.m. contest.
Throughout the first half, Cerritos
was the aggressor and had their share of chances to set
up shots, but could not string together enough passes to
put themselves in position to get one in the net. As for
Compton, they spent most of the first half turning away
all Falcon attacks, while taking their chances with long
passes.
Defensively for Cerritos, they
received excellent back line assistance from sophomore
Marco Pulido
(South Gate HS),
along with freshmen
Luis Segovia
(California HS),
Ivan Perez
(Chaparral, NV HS)
and
Eusebio
Alvarez (Western
HS). The goalkeeper, sophomore
Miguel Lopez
(Vocational Tech,
NV HS) made just two saves, but none bigger
than the one he made in the 88th minute.
After freshman
Andy Rico
(Lynwood HS)
just missed giving Cerritos a lead in the 87th minute on
a header attempt that was stopped cold by Tartar
goalkeeper Juan Rodriguez (5 saves), Compton came back
and had their best chance. With Segovia fighting a
Compton player for the ball, he went down leaving Lopez
with a one-on-one situation. With the attempt going to
the lower outside corner, Lopez dove and made the
crucial stop. Freshman
Bryan Mejia
(Montebello HS)
also had two great scoring opportunities in the game. |
