The
Cerritos College men’s soccer team scored two first half
goals to open up a comfortable lead and went on to post
a 3-1 South Coast Conference win at home against
Pasadena City College on Friday afternoon. With the win,
the Falcons are now 9-2-3 overall and remain in a tie
for first place with a 3-0-1 conference record. As for
the Lancers, they fell to 3-5-2 overall and 0-3-1 in the
SCC. Cerritos will now host El Camino College at 2:00
p.m. on Tuesday.
Despite the
heavy winds throughout the game, the Falcons relied on
long passes to move the ball downfield and kept the
offensive pressure on the Lancer goalkeeper throughout
the game. In the 17th minute, Cerritos struck
when freshman forward
Michael Paz
(California HS) scored on a nice crossing pass
from sophomore midfielder
Bryan Mejia
(Montebello HS). Pasadena City looked for their
opportunities and it looked as though they might tie the
game, but sophomore goalkeeper
Ivan Mercado
(Paramount HS) made a brilliant diving save off a
hard shot from Gurgen Adzemian in the 31st
minute.
Before the end
of the first half, the Falcons struck again when
sophomore defender
Luis Segovia
(California HS) scored past Mario Umanzor on a
diving header in front of the net. Cerritos was deep in
Lancer territory and after a missed scoring opportunity,
the rebound went to sophomore midfielder
Leo Munoz
(Downey HS), who sent the ball to Segovia, and he
scored.
It was 3-0 in
the second half when freshman midfielder
Gerardo Torres
(Norte Vista HS) scored in the 68th
minute on a hard shot after receiving a lead pass from
sophomore midfielder
Brian Alvarez
(Salesian HS). The shutout for Mercado was ruined
when Ricky Reyes scored in the 82nd minute on
a set piece, with Abbas Said earning the assist. |
