In
an extremely physical South Coast Conference game on
Wednesday afternoon, the Cerritos College men’s soccer
team played to a 2-2 tie with El Camino College. The
game, which was moved from yesterday due to wet playing
conditions at Cerritos, had an intensity to it
reminiscent to a playoff game. Trailing 2-1 early in the
second half, the Falcons were able to tie the game and
withstood several Warrior scoring opportunities late in
the game. The tie keeps Cerritos unbeaten in the SCC at
3-0-2, while they are 9-2-4 overall. As for the
Warriors, they are now 0-3-2 in conference play and
5-5-4 on the season. The team will now travel to East
Los Angeles College for a 4:00 p.m. game on Friday.
In their next
game, the Falcons will have to play without sophomore
midfielder
Ivan Perez (Chaparral, NV HS), who
received a red card in the second half, along with head
coach
Benny Artiaga, who was also red carded after
questioning the call on Perez.
After
surrendering an early goal in the second half to fall
behind, 2-1, Cerritos looked to even the game and turned
the pressure up on the El Camino defense. In fact, it
was Perez who had the best opportunity to score, but his
shot in the 69th minute just missed the side
of the net. However, just a minute later, the Falcons
sent the ball toward the Warrior net, where freshman
Michael Paz
(California HS) scored on a loose ball that
possibly could have been knocked in by an El Camino
player.
Although there
wasn’t any more scoring in the game, both goalkeepers
were asked to make big saves to preserve the tie.
Sophomore
Ivan Mercado (Paramount HS) posted an
amazing save in a two-on-one situation in the 82nd
minute, as he stymied Rhys Orpe on a point blank shot.
Warrior goalkeeper Brulio Ceballos returned the favor as
he made one of his several diving saves in the final
minutes of the game. This time, it was freshman
Jonathan Rivas
(Santa Fe HS) to headed the ball toward an open
part of the net, only to have Ceballos turn him away. |
