In
the first half of their South Coast Conference men’s
soccer game on Tuesday, both Cerritos College and Long
Beach City College were playing with a very physical
approach, while at the same time, creating scoring
opportunities. After each team scored once in the first
45 minutes, the Falcons were able to spread the ball out
more and use their team speed, which resulted in more
chances for Cerritos and less for the Vikings. As a
result, the team scored three second half goals and
pulled away for a 4-1 win. With the victory, the
Falcons, ranked #4 in the country and #8 in the state,
improved to 11-2-4 overall and 5-0-2 in the SCC, while
the Vikings fell to 6-4-4 and 3-3-1. Cerritos will now
host top-ranked Mt. San Antonio College in a 4:00 p.m.
game on Friday. In their first meeting of the season,
the Falcons and Mounties played to a 1-1 draw.
Cerritos broke
the tie early in the second half, as they sent the ball
toward the Viking net, which allowed freshman
Norm
Mariscal (Corona Centennial HS) to score
his first of two goals on the day. Sophomore
Leo Munoz
(Downey HS) was credited with the assist, which
was also his first of two in the win. That goal seemed
to change the tempo of the game, as the Falcons were
able to get more space to play with, while the Vikings
dropped back on defense to counter the superior Falcon
speed.
Right after
their go-ahead goal, Cerritos was put in a position of
having to play a man down the remainder of the game. The Falcons
saw that as an opportunity to play with more space on
the field and continued to push the ball up the sideline
and get around the LBCC defense. In the 66th
minute, Munoz fed a ball to
Michael Paz
(California HS) crossing in from the sideline and
he got past Ernesto Mariscal after entering the box and
drilled a shot into the net past goalkeeper Chris DeWalt.
"After we went a man down, the team really showed their
character," said head coach
Benny Artiaga.
"We could have decided to just play for the tie, but
this team showed the heart of a champion and fought for
the win."
The Falcons
closed out the scoring in the 82nd minute
almost the same way they scored their third goal. With
sophomore
Bryan Mejia (Montebello HS) maneuvering
to gain control of the ball, he spotted Mariscal, who
ran past Albert Jimenez and scored easily into a wide
portion of the goal.
Long Beach City
attempted to push the ball back into Cerritos territory,
and looked to Mariscal, Victor Flores and Arturo Guizar,
but Falcon goalkeeper
Diego Millan
(Paramount HS) made several good saves to shut
down the Vikings. |
